9 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 9th [January 1884]. Quite unexpectedly Olga turned up today for a sitting tho’ rather late & I had a good hour & half work. While we were busy Henry came in with the Times & read out to us an account of a great fire at Canford. The grand staircase—the Zurbaran pictures—& part of the tapestries of the great Hall were burnt & several thousand pounds of damage done– It was a great shock to hear of. Directly after lunch went out in gondola with Henry & Sir Wm called at Britannia on the Bruces & they were out. Left the gentlemen at the Stabto & went to see Mrs Jopling who was still in bed. Mrs Lane was with her. I went on to sit with Carry & found her up on the sofa in the drawing room. Mr Eden came in before I left. Henry called for me & took me home. Had dinner party. The French Consul & Mme Mimaut, Css Marcello, Css Olga Mocenigo, Mr & Mrs Thomas Bruce, Mr Malcolm. Ct Serego was to have dined but cd not come on account of the illness of his child. In the eveng Mrs West & her two girls came to tea.
