20 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 20th January [1884]. Modelled little statuettes. After lunch went out with Henry & we took a walk on the Zattere. I went into the Colsina Inn to see Mrs West who was at home & then I heard that Pss Metternich’s child of 11 had died this morning of scarlet fever– Pss M. herself & 2 servants are also down with the same fever—every one is horribly shocked. We called on P. & Pss Windischgrätz & found them at home. They were full of the sad event. I went to see Carry & met there Mme de Pilat who was very sad. Went home to tea & at our door met Css Marcello who came to say she had put off her reception of tonight on hearing the news. Had tea in the studio. Mrs Brown came also M. & Mme Castellani, Ct & Css Canevaro, Mlle Cozzi & then Css Brandolin & her little girl all came. Ninina Brandolin only arrived yesterday from Milan. Cortelazzo arrived from Vicenza to stay with us.
