28 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 28th January [1884]. I woke with a headache but I had to be busy all the morning doing last jobs before leaving home. Lunched at 1 and Miss Holas came to say goodbye after wh Ersilia Canevaro sent her gondola for me & I had to hurry off. I found her not very well. I sat with her a little while & then took Maria Cozzi to Mrs Browns to introduce her & arrange about a picture of Mrs Browns Maria wanted to copy. From there we went to Mrs Bronson who was out so Maria left me at the Stabto where Henry joined me. He had been with Mr Whitehead to Kirchmayr’s studio to see a collection of abt 12 pictures wh Mr Whitehead had bought at Sienna for £2000 for wh Henry said he wd not have given £10. We went to Malgarottos to see the terra cotta vase he is making us & after several more errands went to bid the Edens adieu & thence went home. I found Emily R there waiting for me– My head was so bad I had to lie on the sofa & there remain in spite of a visit from Mme Bassecourt. Emily gave her tea & I remained quiet—but later on I got worse & Emily kindly took care of me & at dinner time gave me 2 large glass of champagne wh on acct of my state of fatigue did not even make me tipsy. Henry went to the Brandolins after dinner (to wh Emily remained) and I had to give up all idea of going & undressed & was just going to bed when Olga Mocenigo appeared & remained with me till Henry returned home.
