29 January 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 29th January [1884]. Rose a good deal better but not feeling very well. We left home to go by 9.5 train. At the station Ersilia & Emily R & Signor Castellani were there to see us off. At Vicenza Cortelazzo came to see us & I gave him the wax models done by Malgarotto but we only stopped there 4 mins. At Verona I got some soup. I rested & slept most of the journey. We got to Milan abt 3.40 & D. Carlo d’Adda met us & took us to the Hotel Cavour in his carriage. At 6.30 we walked to the Via Manzoni 45 & dined with the d’Addas & then went to La Scala opera to hear Gli Ugonotti with M. d’Adda & Juanito & his wife. Being the first night the theatre was full & it was a fine sight. The Prima donna was Mme Pantaleoni—who sang well—she is little & squints—but has a good voice. The tenor Tamagno was much applauded but his voice is not simpatico. On the whole the opera was well given. There was no ballet.
