31 January 1884 — Milan | |
Thursday. 31st [January 1884]. Henry went off at 7 with M. d’Adda & Como to see some Luini pictures on sale belonging to Ct Passalacqua at his villa near there. I had tea in bed & read till 10 when I got up & at 11 went to lunch with Mme d’Adda & her son & daughter in law. After lunch Mme d’Adda went out & I went up to Mme Fulvia’s rooms & I played accompaniments & she sang. I was interrupted by Mme d’Adda returning to fetch me. We went to see the jewellery of Gonfaliere & then walked through the gallery—a great feat for Mme d’A who is very lame. Returned to her house & had tea & worked and she had visits from Marquis Pallavicini & another gentleman & then some ladies. At 5 Henry & M. d’Adda returned & he took me back to the hotel. Mme d’Adda entertained me a great deal with stories of 48 how her husband & all good partiots abstained from smoking in order not to pay duty to the Austrian govt & how all the ladies did all they cd to spite the Austrians in small ways in order to show their patriotism. At 7 we returned to Via Manzoni & there dined & met at dinner M. & Mme & Mlle Mainoni & the Marchese Giusoni & 2 brothers Belgioso. At 8.30 we went to the Opera with Signor d’Adda & Mme Fulvia & her husband & saw La Giaconda. Pantaleoni sang well. The scenery being all laid at Venice was very pretty. The music light & pleasant but nothing wonderful. We did not stay to the Ballet but retired early. | |
