1 February 1884 — Milan | |
Friday. 1st February [1884]. Breakfasted at 9.30. Wet day. Went off in cab to Signor Frizzoni’s & found him in & he showed us his own pictures & then Morelli’s & we stayed there till nearly 12. We went to the gallery & walked through it but did not remain as it was so cold. We went to the old Senate house & then got out to see the statue of Napoleon III in bronze on horseback wh has just been made & provisionally put up there till a place for it should be decided on. It is a fine work & one of the best of this day. Returned to the hotel to lunch. We had hardly begun lunch when I perceived I had lost one of my bracelets—a gold circle with 5 diamonds sent to me by Arthur my brother to Consple. I was very sorry about it & sent Luigi back to Morelli’s rooms to have it searched for, but I gave it up as lost. In the lunch room an old gentleman came & said to Henry “I must introduce myself to you I am ’awkshaw & then he stood & spoke a while & said he was returning to London. When he was gone Henry explained that he was Sir John Hawkshaw the great engineer & how when both were in the H. of C Henry went to Sir John & said he had just seen a very fine picture by Poynter, the raising of the Egyptian obelisk & he strongly recommended Sir J to buy it. He went off & bought it at once & that is how Poynter sold his first picture. At 2.30 Mme Fulvia d’Adda came to fetch us in the carriage & took us to the Borromeo palace to see the pictures belonging to the family. We saw some fine Luini’s & many interesting things but it was too dark to see anything well as it rained in torrents. From there she took us to Donna Mariquitas who was not very well & so had not been able to take us to the Borromeos. We had tea & sat some time talking & several people came to call. We walked back to the hotel at 3 & then returned to the d’Adda’s to dinner at 6.30. Henry went to the Milanese theatre. I remained with Da Mariquita & Da Fulvia. The latter went away early to pay visits & I remained alone with Da M. & taught her to crochet a quilt like mine taught me by Olga Mocenigo—& then I went back early to the hotel. | |
