14 February 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 14th February [1884]. I was writing in the morning when Mrs Austin (Temmy) made her appearance & so we had a chat & she remained to lunch. Mr Rate called. At 3 Henry & I went out in the carriage first to see his old aunt Mrs Austen whom we found pretty well tho grown horribly thin & lantern jawed. She seemed to know us & not as last time to have mistaken us for someone else. She however talked of having been out & said many things which showed she was not herself & did not know anything for 2 minutes together. We went on to 7 Fitzroy Sqr to see Lady Eastlake– We found her a complete invalid bound to her sofa by rheumatism & looking very pale. She was cheerful & as active minded as usual & we sat with her an hour. Went on to my sister Blanche’s where we had tea. Henry walked home. I remained on a little while. Connie & Charlie came there & Connie & I went on to call on Mrs Rate & found her & Margie at home. They made me stop & help to put the furniture right in their drawing room & then I went home– My cold was bad & I was tired. We dined alone—had cribbage & went to bed early.
