23 February 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 23rd February [1884]. At home writing &c in morning. Blanche Ponsonby came to see me. Directly after lunch Henry & I walked to the Burlington to see the Old Masters. We were very much pleased with the Reynolds there which we thought finer than those at the Grov:. There was a collection of Poole’s pictures wh we did not much care for. I took Hy to the National gallery to see Mr Burton & then we left cards & at ¼ to 5 went to 4 Chesterfield Gardens to see Lady Somers for the first time since Ld Somers death. She looked very sweet in her widow’s cap & beautiful tho’ aged. She was much upset at first & we both cried she & I but after a while she grew calmer & even smiled & we were all glad to have got over the meeting. We dined at Mr & Mrs Tom Bruce’s & met Sir Henry & Lady Lock M. Stevens who had been our secy at Consple & his father—Miss Grant the sculptress. She & I had some worky talk & she kindly offered to put me in the way of studying & I appointed to go to her studio on Wedy at 3.
