24 February 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 24th February [1884]. I walked thro’ Green Park on Sunday to go to morning service at St Margaret’s Westr. As soon as I got in Miss Laughton saw me & beckoned me into Lady Mays’ pew wh was very lucky for me. Canon Farrar preached a very good sermon on charity. he went straight to the core. He reproved the rich for their luxury by wh they gave a bad example to the poor. He condemned bad literature such as society papers & he was most eloquent & interesting. I walked home to lunch. At 2.30 went out in the brougham to see Evy Lady Stanhope & had a pleasant chat with her. I went on to try to see Addie Ly Tavistock & she was out. I went on to Lady Hammond who was in & very kind. Met Mr & Mrs Hugh Wyndham there who are now 1st secy at Consple. I went in next door to see Mrs Burr but did not stay as she was going out. Went from there to Mrs Poynter who was at home & I had a nice chat with her, had tea, & saw her sweet little boy of 2 years old– Went on to Mrs Rate’s & found them all at home. Mr Spencer Lyttleton was also there. I walked on to my brother Arthur’s. He was not in so I walked home pretty tired– We dined quite alone. I played the piano in the evening.
