25 February 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Monday. 25th February [1884]. Blanche looked in in the morning. I went to lunch at the Temple with Mrs Vaughan & there met Lord Stanley of Alderley, the Mahometan, & his brother the fervent R.C. Priest & Miss Wyse. Dean Vaughan was there at luncheon & the Rector of St George’s in the East whose name I do not remember. We were rather a curious incongruous party but Mrs Vaughan is so clever she drags everyone along with her. Miss Wyse was the most pleasant & sympatica of the party—the priest had something defiant & nervous in his manner & did not please me. After lunch a few more people came & at 3.15 I left & went to shop & called on Mrs T. Bruce who was at home & I went for a moment to Mrs Rate & came home by 5. Old Lady Galway came to ask if we had any messages for Venice as she was just going out there to see Lord Houghton off for Cairo where he is going to visit his daughter Mrs FitzGerald. Later Sir Francis de Winton called. We had not seen him since he was military attaché at Consple. He told us he had just accepted Genl. Gordon’s place on the Congo as agent of the K of the Belgians. We went to dine at Hamilton house & met Mr Clark & Capt. Fellowes.
