26 February 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 26th February [1884]. Shrove Tuesday. Blanche fetched me after lunch & we drove together and she went to the Stores to buy things for her dinner & she brought me home by tea time. Henry & I dined at the Misses Duff Gordon & met Lady Sligo, Lord Carlingford, Browning the poet, Ld & Ly Bury & Sir Coutts Lindsay. It was the first time we had seen him since his disgraceful separation from his wife & I was not well pleased at having him to take me down to dinner. Luckily for me Lady Sligo seemed to be amused by him & I was very lucky in having Browning on my left. Sir Coutts besides behaving badly to his wife has tried to brave it out—continues to live with another woman & their children & has meanly tried to keep his wife’s fortune for himself to continue his riotous living. He is related [to] the Duff Gordons who take his part & try to uphold him.
