13 March 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Thursday. 13th March [1884]. Henry went off by 9 o’cl train to Oxford to go to see the Pictures of Blenheim with other trustees of the Nat. Gallery with a view of buying them. I got up late. Mrs Poynter came to lunch as did also my sister Maria. When they were both gone I drove out. I went to see Lady Somers who was in—then on to try to see Lady Eastlake who was too ill to receive me but I saw a lady who was staying with her & who gave me a full acct of her. She is suffering terribly from rheumatism & is constantly in pain & sleepless nights nor does narcotics take any effect on her. I went on to Blanche’s & waited till she came in to tea. We dined with Sir Baliol & Lady Brett. Henry returned home by abt 5 on purpose. He was enchanted with the pictures. Met at dinner Ld & Ly Malmesbury, Lady Ventry, Col. Colville, Mr Mathews Q.C., Mr Webster Q.C. & Mr & Mrs               . I sat next Sir Baliol & had a most amusing dinner as Mr Mathews was full of fun & paradoxes & Sir Baliol drew him out & Ly Malmesbury was quaint. Col. Colville took me to dinner & on being presented to me said he had sat next me at church the last 2 Sundays at St Margarets which I remembered. After dinner I had a long chat with Sir Baliol. He, Henry & Mr Webster capped each others stories & we were very merry.
