18 March 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Tuesday. 18th March [1884]. Susie St Quintin came to see me in the morning & so did Mrs Burr who remained some time talking. Maria’s 2 little girls the twins came up to lunch with me & afterwards I took them to Lady May’s & the niece Miss Laughton was kind eno’ to take us all over the houses of Parliament. We found the Court of Appeal sitting in the Lords & a morning sitting in the House of Commons. We met Sir Thomas Erskine May going into the house in his gown & wig & he stopped & spoke to us. We went on afterwards to leave some cards &c & then I gave the children tea before they returned home. Mrs Willie Hanson called, also Miss Hogarth. Henry & I went to dine at Mr & Mrs Stewart Hodgson’s. Sir John Lubbock took me down & I sat next our host. Met Ld & [Lady] Arthur Russell, Mr & Mrs F. Lockyer & others I did not know. The house is quite new & lovely. The Hodgsons are very rich & have built the house & spent a lot of money. They have in their drawing room a frieze by Leighton & mosaic decorations the making of wh we had superintended at Venice designs by Walter Crane. There was an evening party afterwards but we did not remain.
