2 April 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Wednesday. 2nd April [1884]. I went off after breakfast to Blanche to ask her if she wd like to go with me to see Mildred confirmed. She said she would so we went off in a cab together to St Paul’s Knightsbridge by 20 mins past 11 & found the church already quite full so that with difficulty I got a place & Blanche getting none had to go away. I fd myself in the front pew next a lady who evidently mistook me for someone else—perhaps Maria & to my dismay I found that I was just in front of Adeline whom I had never seen since the sad history of her parting with Arthur. She looked thin & ill. The Bishop of Litchfield confirmed in the place of the Bp of London who was ill. There were over 500 candidates & it took 2½ hours. I was a good deal overcome by the heat & had a crying fit. I got home after 2. Henry had lunched at the city. I found Mrs Austin had come to lunch with me & was waiting. At 3 I went out in the brougham & fetched Henry at the Atheneum & brought him home. Arthur came to tea & Mrs Austin was also there. After tea Arthur & I walked together as far as Hamilton House, but found no one at home so I walked home alone. We dined alone.
