14 April 1884 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Monday. 14th April [1884]. I worked in the morning talking to Maria & Temmy & then practised the piano. Arthur went over to Croker to see Mrs Hillyar & spend the afternoon. Theo took Maria & Rd, Alice, Henry & I over to Sherborne Castle to see the pictures. Maria & I went in the Victoria, the rest in the break. It is a lovely old place built in the form of H and has a few nice pictures in it of the family of Digby & a curious picture of Q. Elisabeth going in Procession to Hunsdon with portraits of all her court. There was a nice old housekeeper who instead of declaiming in the way of her genus gave up a very nice catalogue of the pictures wh we found had been compiled by Lord Portman’s daughter. I took it & read it aloud to the rest & had rather an absurd adventure. Being rather tired I now & then sat down whilst I read out & once whilst reading I sat me down on a chair I saw near– Luckily Alice Du Cane was near & caught me by the arm for she saw the chair had no seat! The careful housekeeper having taken out the seats of the chairs to preserve them. We had a good laugh at the idea of the absurd sight I should have presented had I fallen through. We came straignt home after seeing the Castle it being too wet to go to the ruins. Arthur had been to Croker to call on Mrs Hillyar & returned to dinner. Mr & Mrs Dendy dined at Inwood. I & Merthyr & Arthur sang glees very badly after dinner while the others played whist.
