16 April 1884 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Wednesday. 16th April [1884]. Maria, Richard & their girl Alice left Inwood. Henry & I accompanied them as far as Salisbury. Rd went straight on to town. Maria & Alice spent the day with us at Salisbury. We walked from the station to the Cathedral & remained a couple of hours in it. We met by chance there Lord Morley & Mr Albert Grey– I was enchanted with the appearance of the place—the cathedral rising out of the green lawn the quiet close—the old fashioned houses. Saw 2 monuments in the cathedral to members of our family. One to a Genl. Layard & next to one to a Bertie—there was also a stone in the pavement to a daughter of a Duke of Ancaster. From seeing the Cathedral we went to the White Hart where we had a good lunch & then went in to visit 2 or 3 antiquity shops but bought nothing. We went to the Hall of John Halle which is now used as a china shop & then we returned to the station & put Maria & Alice into their London train & had to wait a little while for our train wh took us back to Inwood. Merthyr & Luff were in the train having been up to town for the day & the Dss (Elianor) of Northumberland came down by the same train to stay at Inwood being Theo’s sister. Merthyr went to dine at the Hunt dinner at Sherborne & Luff too. Mrs Austin left for Wells at the same time as we went to Salisbury. She went to Templecombe station with us & was so low in her mind at going alone that we had to torment & chaff her to cheer her up.
