1 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 1st June [1884]. Went to church & there was joined by Alice & the Murrays they having gone to St Marks to see if there was a procession. I played the harmonium & Annie led the singing. It was hot & stormy all day. Read in afternoon. At 6 Mr Murray’s friend Mr George came to call & brought us some lovely sketches he has done to see. He is a young architect & told us he had made the design for the D. of Wellington’s chateau at Las Torres near Granada. We told him we had stayed there & that only the foundations of one tower had as yet been built & on that stood the whole house– He said he had been very young when he made the design & was very good natured at the chaff abt it. While he was with us there was a tremendous thunderstorm & he had to wait till it cleared. Henry took Mr Murray out for a walk. Css Valmarana came to tea & later Mrs Oliphant the novelist with her niece. Mrs O. is a little old Scotch lady with quite white hair & round pale face & nice bright brown eyes. I showed her our rooms & pictures. Till dinner time Annie & I drew natural flowers. After dinner we all went out in gondola & followed the galleggiante on the Canal. There were the usual bengal lights & illuminations at S. Giorgio. The P&O steamer was also illuminated & sent up rockets & there were very pretty fireworks on S. Giorgio. We remained out till 11– The weather cleared & the moon came out & it was a very pleasant evening.
