2 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 2nd June [1884]. Worked sewing machine in morng. The Murrays & Alice went out sightseeing and did not return till after 2 so we had our lunch late. In the middle of it came Mr Forbes Brown & his mother to pay me a visit & to say Mr B goes away to England tonight. Mr Malcolm also came today & persuaded Mr Murray not to go to the Cadore tomorrow as the weather is unsettled but to wait till Thursday when he Malcolm was going there himself & would take them with him. After much demurring Mr Murray agreed to do this & there was general rejoicing at the reprieve. Annie & I made up her linen riding shirt with the machine. Henry took Mr Murray to walk in the public gardens. Tea in the studio at 5. Ersilia Canevaro came. Later Mrs West called with Lady Clancarty an original old lady who wore a hat with feathers & under it a black veil tied round her head under her chin. She must have been a beauty in her youth as she has fine brown eyes. She was amusing & rather affected. After dinner, I made cigarettes for Mr Hallam Murray and at 9 we all except Mr Murray went out in gondola. It was blowing fresh—the moon shone—& there were lovely piles of clouds. We stopped to hear the singing & the band under the giardino reale & then went under the bridge of sighs & home by the small canals.
