3 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 3rd June [1884]. Alice took the Murrays sightseeing. I wrote letters. Lady Sligo came to see me & she brought her brother in law Lord J. Brown with her & I took her all over our house. After lunch Lady Westbury & her niece Miss Teza Simpson called. Lady W. had known Henry in former years & said she knew my mother. She was very much interested in seeing our pictures so I explained them to her. She is still a youngish woman altho’ she is the widow of the lawyer of 3 generations back. At 4 Mr Malcolm called for me & took me in his gondola to his garden where we joined the rest of the party who had been to see S. Giobbe. Mr Malcolm gave us old Cyprus wine & I made tea & Mr Malcolm cut us quantities of lovely flowers. We got home a little before 7. Mrs Oliphant dined with us. There was a thunderstorm & heavy rain so we cd not go out in the evening. Mrs Oliphant & Mr Murray talked in a very interesting way of Sir Walter Scott & of Byron but Mrs O. was not very interesting.
