7 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 7th June [1884]. I worked on small model in wax of Henry’s portrait. Alice read to me. Lord & Lady Sligo came to lunch & stayed some time after talking. At 4 we all went out. Stopped for a moment at the Stabto and then went on to the Eden’s garden. The usual afternoon storm was coming up & we did not dare stay there many minutes but hurried home. The storm after all blew over & after dinner we went out in gondola towards the station to see the grand reception given to the Venetians who were returning from Turin where they had taken part in a national regatta & had taken the first prize. They belonged to the Society of Bucintoro & the enthusiasm of the people was great. There was a galeggiante with municipal band of music—crowds of boats & gondolas & the fondamenta were crowded with a cheering people—bengal & Electric lights & occasional rockets were going on all the while. We got home abt 11.
