12 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 12th [June 1884]. Rainy day. Wrote letters. Sewed. Read to Alice. After lunch it cleared a little. Henry & Alice walked to Piazza. I went out in gondola & called on Mrs Bronson whom I found in—then on to see Miss Grant & enquire after her niece also to tell her I had heard that Alice’s brother Arthur was coming here so Alice would not go home with her (Miss G). I then went & fetched Henry & Alice. We went to call on Mrs West—she was out so A & Hy walked home. I went to Casa Semeticolo to call on the Montalbas. I found Mr Montalba & Clare & Helda at home– Mr M. is a curious looking old man speaking English with a very foreign accent. I went home to 5 o’cl tea. After dinner we went out in gondola but were soon driven home by rain– Played the harmonium till bed time.
