13 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 13th June [1884]. Henry & Alice went off at 10 to see the procession for S. Antonio from St Marks to the Salute. I spent a dreadfully idle morning trying to begin to net a purse for Henry. After lunch I worked the sewing machine. Css Lützow & her daughter called. In the morning we had a visit from a man called Burroughs of the Temperance League to beg the English residents to set up a reading room for the sailors. We promised to help. After tea I went out in gondola with Alice & called on Miss Grant & on Css Thun & then returned home. After dinner I went out in gondola with Henry & Alice, having a slight return of nettle rash remained at home. It suddenly began to lighten while [we] were out & continued all night with distant thunder.
