14 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 14th [June 1884]. Alice read aloud while I worked. Mr Malcolm sent me some flowers. After lunch I sat out on the Belvidere & there Mrs Eden found me when she came to call. Henry & Alice went off to Murano. An American artist & his English wife Mr & Mrs Newman came to call & I showed them our pictures. Before they left came Mme Martini the wife of the Admiral here & then Mme Bassecourt & it was nearly 5 when they were all gone—then Mrs Eden & I walked together to her house & I left word at home to have the gondola to fetch me. When we arrived at Mrs Edens we saw Mr Eden going off in his steam launch to make a trial trip. She & I had tea & as our gondola was there we went over to her garden. The day had been dull & just as we got there it began to rain so we only stayed a little while to get some flowers & then returned home. Mr Malcolm & Lord & Lady Alwyne Compton dined with us. It was a wet evening & there was no going out. We decided today to go away on Monday, to stop a night at Verona & then to go on to Turin to see the Exhibition.
