16 June 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 16th June [1884]. Henry, Alice & I went off by the 9.15 train to Verona. We got there soon after 12 & went to the Hotel de Londra. Had some lunch & then went out. We left Venice in the rain & it rained more or less all day. We took a carriage & went to the Museum to see the pictures by Cavazzola & those by Caroto & then drove on to Sta Maria in Organo to see the beautiful carved & inlaid wood by the monk Morone in the Sacristy & Choir. We found it had all suffered very much from last year’s inundations. We saw a fine picture by Savoldo in a side chapel. Went on to St Giorgio Maggiore & then to San Fermo & then to the Arena. The rain was dripping everywhere & men were busy replacing some of the old stones of the seats with new ones as it was said that the filtering through of the rain was bringing down the edifice. We returned very damp to the hotel abt 4. I went in & rested, Alice & Henry walked our again. We dined at the table d’hôte at 6 & then sat & had coffee in the glazed court. It was very cold & Henry was very shivery so after a few games of cribbage I gave him hot brandy & water & we all went to bed.
