20 July 1884 — La Punta, Longarone
Sunday. 20th July [1884]. There was a thunderstorm nearly all night long and at 5 it was very lively. When Gigia came at 7 to call me she said there was a difference of 17 degrees in the atmosphere and we found it beautifully cool & pleasant breakfasted at 7.30. Read, wrote & copied. Breakfast at 12. Painted a wild flower in afternoon. Copied again for Henry. Read aloud to him from the Quarterly. Tea at 4. Went out for a drive & brought home quantities of lovely wild flowers. We came in at ½ to 7. Alice & I sat & arranged the flowers. Arthur & Henry were also in the drawing room. Suddenly we felt a shake & a burr which seemed to go thro’ one. I looked up & said that’s an earthquake. We found afterwards that the servants had felt it & the time was 7.13 P.M. Gigia says she was walking out & feeling a sort of shake & hearing a dull noise she looked round to see if it might be distant thunder—& when she came in was told it was earthquake. We dined at 7.30. Played cribbage & drew flowers in eveng.
