23 July 1884 — La Punta, Longarone
Wednesday. 23rd July [1884]. Breakfast in room at 7.30. Copied for Henry. At 10 painted cyclamen while Alice read aloud. Lunch at 12. Painted again for an hour. Read aloud to Henry from the Quarterly. Tea at 4. After tea Alice & I went to finish drawing the big plant & were sitting quietly working away when I saw something white creeping to my feet & looking up I found it had been turned off from one place & on to where we were wh was the bed of the river so we had to gather up our things & retreat. I sat on the terrace & drew the house & Alice went with Henry to draw till dinner time when Mr Malcolm came in & at 7.30 we dined. It was so warm that after dinner we sat out in the garden till past 10. Had a telegram from Niederdorf to say they cd give us rooms so we decided to start on Friday. News in the papers that the cholera is spreading in France– Besides Toulon & Marseilles it is now at Arles & other places.
