25 July 1884 — La Punta, Longarone
Friday. 25th July [1884]. Called at 6. Breakfast in our room at 6.30 & started off in a carriage at 7. We took leave of Mr Malcolm with the greatest regret. We were unfortunate at having a dull morning threatening rain. Henry, Alice, Arthur & I went inside the carriage & Gigia on the box. Our heavy luggage left last night, we were to meet it on the frontier. As we got up the valley near Perarolo it began to rain but again cleared. We took a renfort then up the steep bit to Tai. It rained again & we had to shut the carriage. Changed horses at Tai & had some coffee brought us in the carriage & then hastened on. We got to Cortina abt two & stayed at the Aquila Nara to lunch– The weather had begun to improve & the N. wind seemed to be getting the upper hand & to be going to blow away the clouds. After lunch Alice went out & I sat down & drew & painted some wild columbine flowers I had picked. Henry rested & at 4 we had another cup of coffee & started off– It was raining again & continued to do so with more or less fury all the rest of the journey. Arthur got out & walked up the Ampezzo pass, the rest of us had to keep still– At Schluderbach we stopped a moment to say we should not need rooms for tomorrow– A thunderstorm was going on & so we hurried on along a rough road wh had been evidently washed away in many places by Saturday’s storm & was still being repaired. It poured & blew & was very cold & we pitied Gigia on the box & it was nearly dark when we reached Niederdorf a little after 8. We unpacked Gigia & restored her with brandy & hot water– Got some dinner & went early to bed–
