26 July 1884 — Niederdorf
Saturday. 26th July [1884]. Called at 6 & after breakfast walked to the station to go by the 7.15 train to Munich. We had to change at Franzensfeste & wait a little while for our train. We there got into a carriage with a German gentleman who said he had come straight from Rome & told us what Henry wanted to know that Italy was going to put the Brenner in quarantine against cholera so we shall not be able to get back to Italy. At Innsbruck we dined having 15 mins. in wh to feed—then on to Kufstein where the Bavarian custom house is– After that in 2 hours we got to Munich. It was showery & stormy all day. We got to Munich at 5.30 & were met by Mr MacDonell & an Official of the railway, told him in answer to his enquiries that the quarantine on the Brenner begins from tomorrow at 12—we are caught– Went & took up our quarters at the Bayerischer Hof. Dined at 7. Alice & Arthur went out for a walk in evening.
