28 July 1884 — Munich
Monday. 28th July [1884]. Henry was so bothered about our plans as to whether there would be quarantine which would prevent our getting back into Italy & whether he wd get an answer to a telegram abt it which he had sent to Cortina which he had sent yesterday that he cd not sleep & got up at 5. I got up to 9 o’cl breakfast. Alice & Arthur went out together. I stayed in painting flowers till 12 when Henry & I walked off together & just before we started got a telegram from Cortina to say that road was still open. I left Henry en route & went off to see Emily Reitzenstein. He went to the Legation. I found Emily in & sat with her & she regaled me with cake & Chateau Yquern & then she said she would walk back with me. She took me into a Kunstverein place to see some modern pictures all very bad except some animals by Blaas. We then walked off to a bird shop to see if we could get a piping bullfinch & found a nice quantity of birds of all sort but no bullfinch, we then hastened on to the hotel & found the others at lunch. After lunch I walked off to the Odeonsplatz & took a carriage & went up to the Legation to spend the afternoon with Mrs MacDonell. I sat gossiping with her for some time when she had a visit from Mme Osten Sacken the Russian Minister’s wife—a tall big woman very pleasant & talkative– Then at 5 Henry came to join me—& Mr MacDonell came in with a young Prince Schönberg & the French Minister– We took leave of the MacDonells & walked home. It had been raining nearly all day & now cleared up. Henry & I bought some books to read on the journey. Dined at 7. Emily came for an hour in the evening. Made all the arrangements for Alice & Arthur’s starting tomorrow morning for England by 6.40 train.
