1 September 1884 — Borgo Vico, Como
Monday. 1st September [1884]. I received a letter from Lady Ely in answer to mine to her telling her about Henry’s having the pension. After lunch a Css Sola came to spend the day. The Resta family came to pay me a visit. We sat below & worked. The silk merchant came & I bought 3 pieces of Como silk. Tea at 3.30. At 5 Henry & I took a walk to the church of S. Abbondio—a most curious basilica which has been very well restored. It has 4 aisles & curious early frescoes. Chechiono the boatman guided us there & on the road, close to the station showed us a trattoria, which had originally been part of a Convent which was the headquarters of the tribunal of the inquisition. We came back by another road going round by the outskirts of Como. We had just time to dress for dinner. Played boccette with D. Carlo. There was a great game of chouette & we went to bed at 11.30.
