3 September 1884 — Milan
Wednesday. 3rd September [1884]. Called at 7. Breakfast at 8 & Henry went off to meet Morelli at the Brera. I got dressed later & went off in a cab to the Brera where I found Henry & Morelli examining the pictures & making notes for the new edition of Kugler. We went down into the Archeological museum to see the tomb of Gaston de Foix & some frescoes &c &c. We met Signor Bertini the Director of the Gallery & he took us into his studio & then Henry & I came back to the Hotel to lunch at 12.30. At 1.30 Morelli came to fetch Henry & took him to the Civic Museum. They returned at 3 & fetched me & we went to the Poldi Museum & stayed there some time looking at the pictures. Morelli pointed out 4 pictures which had belonged to him & which he had been obliged to sell to Poldi on account of his having gambled at cards & having no money to pay for his debts. We parted with Morelli & went back to the hotel, & rested and then I drew till dinner time. After dinner Morelli came & he & Henry worked together till past 10 & I amused myself in making a pencil sketch of Morelli.
