19 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 19th September [1884]. Desideri gave me a lesson in painting. After lunch Henry went out to St Marks & I went to leave cards & pay visits. I found only the Misses Montalba at home. I had not seen them since their father’s death & he died while we were at Longarone. They were glad to see me. They looked ill & fagged. Their great amusement is a sparrow & another little bird which they had picked up fallen from their nests & which now hop about & fly on their heads, shoulders &c & are quite tame. I joined Henry at St Marks & we came home together. I wrote letters till dinner time. The Venetian papers has a telegram tonight that Mr West now at Washington is to be the new Ambr at Consple—so there’s an end of that dream. Very hot day. Took row at night and a turn on the Piazza. Cribbage.
