20 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 20th September [1884]. Desideri gave me lesson & I painted the rest of the morng till lunch. Out at 3 & we went to the Edens flowers to ask for some flowers. On to St Giorgio Maggiore to see the pictures by Tiepolo. The church is grand in architecture, the pictures in very bad state. There was a very civil & intelligent monk there who showed us over the church. We went to S. Pietro in Castillo– Modern church– Two pictures by Basaiti entirely rebuilt and spoilt. Went to leave a card at the Arsenal then came home. Put up flowers. Had a visit from Bss Nitta & Css Giustina Valmarana. Wrote letters. When we came from our row we found a letter from our servant Luigi saying he could not get off his engagement to the Russian family & must therefore leave us. Mr & Mrs Eden dined with us. Mr Eden had the sofa to lie on at dinner & in the eveng we had it put into the belvidere where we all sat till they left at just 11.
