21 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st [September 1884]. Went to church in the morning. A strange clergyman helped the service & preached extempory. Very hot day. After lunch wrote &c Tea at 5 & visit from Mme Castellani wh she made very long & tho’ she was very smart she smelt terribly of garlic. We went out abt 5.30 for a row as far as the station & out round by the Giudecca home. Dined 7.30. Henry had another talk with Luigi who said altho’ the Russian family had offered him a 2nd advance in wages he was so sorry to leave us & begged we would keep him. He said he had not slept a wink all night for thinking of it; so it was settled he should remain much to our satisfaction. After dinner a turn in the Piazza & we went to the Edens. Found Mr Wolkoff there—an agreeable Russian who paints well & sells his pictures under the name Russoff. He had a house opposite the Edens–
