28 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 28th September [1884]. I went to church in the morning & then met Mrs Brown & Mme Mimaut & the latter told me that there had been another case of cholera here a man having died yesterday of it. I made cigarettes for Henry & finished packing. The Castellanis all 3 came to call at 2—& Clerle sent the stuff—but Henry thought it dear & not very good so we returned it. At 3 Henry & I went out for a row—& returned at 5. The Colnaghi family came to tea & also the old Countess Valmarana & we had a visit from Mr & Mrs de Westenberg whom we had known at Rome 4 years ago. He is Dutch Minister there. We were very glad to see them & expressed our surprise & pleasure & asked how it came to pass. She said that they had come to avoid the cholera. I said thoughtlessly—“& after all you have come into it.” At this she turned pale & declared she must leave Venice at once, that her husband had promised not to take her anywhere where there had been cholera. We tried to calm her & offered her tea. Her husband dragged Henry into another room & begged him to help him to reassure his wife– She suddenly left the tea room & began to cry & insisted upon going back to the hotel to pack & saying “Tell me where I can go in Italy—to the mountains & where!” We recommended Longarone & they left the house & returned to their hotel. Mr Brown came to say goodbye. Mr Malcolm dined with us & we took him afterwards to the Edens & spent an hour with them & took leave of them.
