30 September 1884 — Verona
Tuesday. 30th September [1884]. We left Verona by 8 o’cl train & went to Mantua. We went to the Inn the Aquila d’Oro & ordered our breakfast & then went out to see the Church of St Andrea to see Mantegna’s chapel where he is buried & where his monument is & 2 pictures by him. Giulio Romano is also buried there but his tomb is lost. We went back to the hotel & lunched & then we went off on foot with a guide to see the Palace & Castle of the Dukes of Mantua. It was most interesting but very hard work as it a most enormous pile of buildings. Our guide fetched us a carriage & we went to the Palazzo del Té just outside the town & then to the Bridge of the mills wh are turned by a part of the lake round the town wh it is dammed up to raise the level. Returned to the hotel & rested for an hour– Then at 5 we dined & at 6.30 returned to the station, picked up our bags & went on to Bologna. Luigi met us there having come straight from Venice with our boxes. We went to the Hotel d’Italie. Had some tea & went to bed—very tired.
