17 October 1884 — Florence
Friday. 17th October [1884]. Henry & I went at 10 to the Uffizzi & with a letter of recommendation from Mr Colnaghi obtained permission for me to copy the picture 1002 so called Titian which Morelli declares to be Correggio in his youth. It is a Madonna-Child with 2 Angels playing musical instruments. I sat there copying till one oclock when I hurried back to the Hotel to luncheon & found Henry returned from the Pitti. At 2.30 we went out again & went [to] Sta Maria Nuova to see the pictures belonging to the Hospital. We saw the fine triptych by Van der Goes painted for the founders of the Hospital. The pictures are kept in a house opposite the Hospital. When first we went to the door & asked to see I Quadri we were told we must wait & on looking astonished the man told us he was “curando una bimba”—we found there was a Dr called Quadri & the porter fancied we had come to see him. We went to the Sta Annunziata to see Andrea del Sarto’s frescoes which are now enclosed & roofed in under glass. Then we went to the Duomo & spent a little time there looking at the fine stained windows. Vespers was going on & the choir were howling them and making a fine noise. Walked back to the hotel. Painted, had tea. Finished a bit of embroidery I have been years doing in imitation of Point de Venice copied from an old work. Dined at 7.30. Read Ruskin aloud to Henry. Cribbage.
