30 October 1884 — Florence
Thursday. 30th October [1884]. Abt 9.30 we went off sight seeing. We went to see Michel Angelo’s house wh is kept as a public monument & which is very complete & well worth seeing. We walked on some way till we found a carriage & drove to St Maria dei Pazzi. We went into the church to see the frescoe by Cosimo Rosselli wh is in a bad state in such a dark corner we cd not see much. We went on to Sta Maria Novella & spent some time in the church & then returned to the Pazzi to see the Fresco by Perugino which is not to be seen before 12. Then we returned to the hotel. Lunch at 1 & had visit from Mr Colnaghi. Drove out at 2 to see Miss Macleod who had visitors it being her day. She insisted on giving us tea cups & a yellow silk blanket & made us carry them off. Went next to call on Mrs Colnaghi & bid her & the girls goodbye & had tea there. Returned to the hotel & finished reading the Ferme du Choquard to Henry. Dined at 7.30. Just as we were finishing dinner 3 men came in to dine, one came up to us & said “You dont remember me! I am John Lumley” & then we recognised the new Ambassador at Rome. his companion was Mr Strutt an antiquary. We remained talking some time—then retired & played cribbage & went early to bed.
