28 November 1884 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 28th November [1884]. I went out soon after breakfast to see Susan Hambro & then to Langham House. I found Maria staying there & she & I went off to look at houses—having sold Exeter House they are looking for a house in town. We went to see two houses in Park Crescent, one of them No 25 took our fancy very much. We walked on to York terrace, then down Hanley & Wimpole St & looked at other houses & only got home by 1.30 for lunch. Directly after lunch Henry & I drove to Dudley house to meet Sir Fred Burton. Mr Ernest Villiers Lord Dudley’s secy received us & we examined the pictures wh are offered for sale to the National Gallery. The collection was very disappointing. There is an interesting picture by Rafael young very like Perugino. We saw the 3 pieces of Sevres wh had cost Lord Dudley £10,000. They seemed to me frightful. Sir Fred Burton came to tea with us & also Alice Du Cane. We dined with Lady Galway at Rutland Gate & met Lord Houghton, Lady Marian Alford & Mr Thornhill (an author). Lord Houghton was attired in a red dressing gown & a black velvet skull cap & we found him at table when dinner was announced. He had his arm in a sling having fallen off his sofa & put out his shoulder. We had not seen him since he had a paralytic stroke. He is much aged & speaks slowly but told stories & seemed as lively as ever.
