10 December 1884 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 10th December [1884]. I was better & about again but I could not do much beyond reading all the morning. In the afternoon drove out, left cards & paid a visit to Addie Tavistock whom I was fortunate eno’ to find at home. I was in to 5 o’cl tea. Just before going out Miss St Clair came to call. She said she & her mother were in town for a short time & she was very cordial. Blanche came in also for a moment but did not stay. We dined with the Gregorys & had a pleasant evening. Met Sir Wm & Miss Drake, Sir Fred: Burton, Lord de L’Isle, Lord Powerscourt, Browning the Poet & Miss Browning & Kinglake. Sir Wm took me to dinner & I had Sir Wm Drake on my right. The dinner was first rate & done by a French cook. In the evening I had a pleasant talk with Kinglake who was very cheerful. He said the Queen was supposed to have complained to Lady Ely that she saw all Govt was becoming impossible. The last time she had seen Gladstone he had done nothing but praise Ld Salisbury and what was still more curious, when she saw Ld Salisbury he had been loud in Gladstone’s praise—so there was now no opposition & government was at an end! Just as we were going away Mr & Mrs Eustace Smith came in so we stayed on a little while to talk to them.
