17 December 1884 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 17th [December 1884]. Did accounts &c. Walked out in the morng for half an hour. After lunch I drove out, went to see Lady Somers who was at home. Also Mrs Kegan Paul whose day it was & there was a small party. Left cards &c & came home early to tea. Dined at Mr J. Morgan (American) to meet Sir Wm & Miss Drake & Mr Hopner of the U.S. Legation. Mr Morgan of the house of Peabody is enormously rich & has fine modern pictures wh he does not care about– He lives 13 Princes Gate & has every luxury—& gave us a capital dinner. Mr Hopner is a cultivated man—& was amusing. He told us that the rich American at Paris Mrs Mackay wanting to have a splendid fête at her house at the Champs Elysées asked permission to illuminate the Arc de triomphe, on being refused by the Prefect she offered to buy it for the night! He told also of a very vindictive man who feeling he was dying sent for his enemy, shook hands & made it up—but as his enemy was leaving the room he called out, “Mind if I recover, this dont count.” Merthyr & Luff came to see us while we were at lunch being in town for a few hours.
