20 March 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 20th March [1885]. Mr Vigor came & I gave him a sitting for my portrait in the morning. Went to lunch at Hamilton House with Henry. From there we went to see Holman Hunt’s picture “The triumph of the Innocents” a curious mad kind of composition with a great deal of cleverness. The disembodied innocents look very earthly & some one has justly said that if the Virgin & Child were cut out of the canvass it might be supposed to be a bacchanalian subject. The vapours rise in the form of bubbles like soap bubbles & are most absurd. Joseph whose back one sees wears a dirty old fez a thing wh did not exist in those days. I drove down to the Onslow Gardens to take Connie out for a drive—we left cards & drove abt & in Piccadilly came upon our brother Arthur walking with Mildred so we stopped & took her with us. I took Connie to her home & then Mildred & I went home to tea. Eda Ashley & her niece Mrs Levitt came to tea. Henry & I dined early & went to see “The Candidate” a play which has had a great run & is well got up.
