23 April 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 23rd [April 1885]. Cold better I went out to see Susan Hambro & then to see Blanche & home to lunch. Afterwards I drove out at 3 & called on Mrs Poynter who was in & then went to Chester Square & fetched Miss Otway & we went together to the House of Commons & stayed till nearly 5. There was nothing very interesting going on & we only stayed to hear the questions asked & arrangements made for the vote of credit next Monday wh led to a little wrangle between Sir Stopford Northcote & Gladstone. I took Miss Otway home & came home myself. We dined with Mr Murray in Albemarle St & took Alice with us. Met there Browning, & Mr Fergusson & his niece, Mr Venables, Mr Greville & Miss Grant (the sculptress). There was great anxiety about the prospects for war with Russia.
