25 April 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 25th April [1885]. I went out directly after breakfast, looked in at Blanche’s & took Edward in my cab as far as Wigmore St & then went on to my brother Arthur’s. He was in bed but speedily got up & then he & I walked together. We went to several shops to look out for a present to give to Mr Malcolm at Venice; we met Hobart Pasha in the street & he declared that it looked like war & that he was glad of it & hoped to take back Batum from the Russians. We went on to Rose the tailor where I ordered a gown & then had to hasten home to lunch– At 2.30 Henry & I started off in the brougham & drove down to Lady Well cemetery to visit Grannie’s grave & to see where her old friend Miss Berkeley lies at her feet– We spent ½ hour there & then drove home. We dined with Lady Thompson at 35 Wimpole St. & met Mr Buckle the youthful editor of the Times and his bride who is a daughter of Payne’s the novelist, also Mr & Mrs Jeune, Sir Fred & Lady Pollock, Browning & Miss Browning. Mr Jeune took me to dinner & I sat next to Sir Henry Thompson who took down the bride. She is young & pretty & nicely dressed. He is a tall good looking ordinary looking man & one cannot understand the serious Times being in such young inexperienced hands.
