2 May 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 2nd [May 1885]. After breakfast Merthyr went off to Rugby to a sale of hounds. I went by 11 o’cl train to Godalming to pay a visit to Mrs Jekyll, Carry Edens mother. I had never seen her before but we found each other on the platform at Godalming & she drove me to her place Munstead. It was a showery day but at Munstead it was quite fine. Miss Carry Jekyll was out photographing & only returned just before I left but I lunched with Mrs Jekyll & then she took me into the garden—there were masses of polyanthus growing in patches in the wood—also gentians in great splendour & other common flowers– The gorse of wh patches were left in the garden was one blaze of flower & smelt delicious. At 4.15 I started back to London having been driven to the station by Mrs Jekyll. On getting home I found Henry starting to the Academy dinner & Arthur came to say there was no train by wh Merthyr could return to night to Inwood. Monty came & dined with Merthyr & me & we had a quiet eveng. Henry came home early & said Granville’s speech had implied that peace with Russia was almost certain.
