7 May 1885 — Milan | |
Thursday. 7th [May 1885]. ] Breakfasted with the Clarks. Morelli came to see us last night & we went together to the Brera– I stayed & began a copy of Rembrandt’s sister. We caused a great commotion by discovering that a portrait of Vandyck had been scribbled over with pencil, a ring having been added to the hand. As it was next the picture I was copying I was entertained by the authorities all coming to inspect & express their horror. Beohm the sculptor & Mr Gilbert of Rome came to speak to me. Abt 1 I walked home feeling very tired & I did not go out again but rested in my room. Morelli dined with us & we sat talking till 9 when I was glad to go to bed. | |
