28 May 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 28th May [1885]. The weather is excessively & suddenly hot. Got up at 7 as usual. Breakfasted at 9.30. Wrote for Henry until 12 when he sat to Mr Vigor & me till lunch. Countess Pisani called just before lunch & we begged her to come & dine this eveng which she promised to do. I had rather a headache & did not go out but rested in the afternoon in my room until 4.30 when I was called down to receive Mrs Brown & a young Mr Eliot who was staying with her. Mr & Mrs Oldfield & their niece Miss Oldfield came to tea & an American lady Mrs van Rensselaer with a little dog. I had met her in London, she is amusing & rather vulgar– She talks of coming to settle in Venice during the winters. Henry, who had been to tea with Css Pisani, came in before they left. Css Pisani dined with us at 7.30 & we sat chatting in the Belvidere till 10 when Henry took her home & I went to bed.
