31 May 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 31st May [1885]. I went to church in the morning & heard the Bishop of Argyll & the Isles preach, a melancholy sanctimonious looking individual arrayed in coloured garments, silk & embroidered stole. Henry took the Oldfields to the Lido & Armenian Convent in the afternoon. I read at home till 4 when Mme Bassecourt came to see me. At 4.30 Maria Cozzi came to fetch me & I went to pay a visit to Ersilia Canevaro & sat there till 6. I was just going home in their gondola when Henry came for me & brought me in. Dined at 7 & then Henry went out to take out the Oldfields & I went upstairs, undressed & read but it was so hot & oppressive I cd not read much.
