21 June 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 21st [June 1885]. I took Annie our cook to church with me. It was excessively hot & strong scirocco. At 5 o’clock Henry & I went to see Genl de Horsey who lives at Casa Semeticolo. He had a great illness last year & had a dreadful operation & has since lost his sight. We had only been with him a few minutes when a tremendous storm came on—violent wind & torrents of rain wh penetrated not only thro’ the closed windows but came in such a deluge down the chimney that we had to take refuge in the room adjoining wh the General used as a bedroom. All the while it thundered & lightened & the storm lasted abt an hour– When there was a lull we hastened home.
