21 July 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 21st July [1885]. Mlle Emma Holas came & she & I began making a white cotton dress for myself. It was a terribly hot & oppressive day. Henry & Mr Colnaghi went to the station abt 4 to meet Sir John Savile Lumley who came from Rome to stay with us. We had tea when he arrived & then I went out in gondola with Mrs Bloomfield Moore who confided to me her present love affairs. How she had been engaged for a week to Browning the Poet & found she cd not do it—& was now madly in love with Mr Keely the inventor of the new motor who has been supported in his experiments by her for some time back. Came in & read in my bedroom with Henry till dinner. Afterwards we all 4 went for a row & got iced lemonade under the giardinetto in our gondola. We came home at 11 but when undressed Henry & I remained at the open window waiting to see the arrival of the Queen of Italy. It was a splendid night & a fine moon. Abt 12.30 she came accompanied with a great many other gondolas & Bengal lights were burnt as she passed. We then went to bed–
